These are the general instructions that apply to all quizzes. If there are any SPECIFIC instructions for a particular quiz, these will appear in the Notes tab for that quiz.

Any Questions

Email us on theolddairyN4quiz AT gmail DOT com - we'll be monitoring this throughout the quiz and will get back to you ASAP.

Charity

If you enjoyed playing a quiz and would like to make an optional donation to a worthy cause, we will make a suggestion for each quiz - just click the Charity link for the quiz.

This is entirely optional - many people are facing financial uncertainty so please don't feel obliged. If you'd like to contribute, the suggested donation is £2 per person.

Teams

You need to be part of a TEAM to answer questions. Each team has a CAPTAIN who sets up the team and invites the other members. Teams can change captain at any time.

To set up a team you will need to register here then follow the instructions.

Once you have created your team you will be given a "JOIN" link and "JOIN" code. You can then email one or other of these to the people that you wish join your team.

If you're re asked to JOIN a team, just follow the instructions. You don't need to register to do so, but it can make playing again in the same team easier if you do so. Once logged in, players can leave teams at any time.

Quizzing

At the top of the page for the round you will see a countdown message telling you how much time you have left to write in your answers. You can also see messages from the Quiz Master there too. Teams will normally have more than one round to work on at any one time – please check the schedule.

You enter the answers into the GREEN cells. As other team members try to answer questions you can see their suggestions below. Any member of a team can type answers in the box – whatever is written there at the end of the round is the final entry.

There is also a "notes" section for each answer to allow you to share suggestions (for the answer and possible links) with other team members.

In the picture round, there is the option to see all the pictures together in a grid – click on the “Picture Grid” link. Answers and notes cannot be entered on this page, but it may help you identify links.

When time runs out you will not be able to make any further changes to your answers.

Scoring

Once the round has ended the team can see the answers and enter the team's scores for each question.

The system has a quick simple answer checker that does part of the scoring job, but teams need to review and submit final scores.

The computer will attempt to identify correct answers and enter the correct score for these questions. These are shown in GREEN so you don't need to check those.

Questions that do not appear exactly as on our answer sheets will be shown in RED. It does NOT mean that these are wrong, it just means that the system cannot exactly match your answer to the way we have written it. This is especially difficult for mutli-part answers such as most of the 39 steps, and also for the Picture Round links as these can be entered in any order.

The unmatched answers will be shown first, followed by the auto-answered questions.

After teams have completed marking and submitted their scores, the leader board will be updated for the quiz, which you can see on the link provided on each round page.

For newcomers to our quizzes

Picture Round

1 point for identifying each of the 20 pictures. The 20 pictures also form five groups of 4 pictures each. Please identify what the groups could be and write them in the boxes where it says "Link 1" etc. - 1 point for each of these.

Examples of connections:

If you identify four pictures as: Jack LONDON, Chicken KIEV, SOFIA Coppola and Lord WELLINGTON A connection could be "Capital cities". You just need to write "Capital cities" in the the Link boxes for the point - no need to specify which number pictures fall into which link.

Link Rounds

General knowledge questions, but the answers are all linked in some way. The nature of the link varies from round to round.

Where we say specific answers are linked such as "LINK 2&3", that means that part or all of your correct answers to these two questions could be put together to make something meaningful.

For example - if the answer to question 2 was "GEORGE Square, Glasgow" and the answer to question 3 was "The Burning BUSH" LINK 2&3 may suggest to you to put GEORGE next to BUSH and make GEORGE BUSH. This would suggest the link for the round could be US Presidents

The names of the rounds may give you a cryptic hint to the link in the round. But they are not always that helpful!

If you don't get the link - don't worry! It's there to help you perhaps guess a few answers that you're not sure of, if you can work out what the link is.

Ways to play

We encourage teams to separately set up their own video conferencing with each other if they are in different locations (e.g. through Zoom, Google Hangouts, Facebook Live, WhatsApp conference call etc) to make things more sociable! Entirely up to you and not needed to take part.

There are no prizes - it's all for fun! Maybe the real prize is the friends we made along the way?
